Simon wins MAXIMISE Award for excellence
Australia's Leading Woodworking Magazine has just awarded Simon's latest piece, SPAN, an award for Excellence in their National competition for 2010. This hall table was made from salvaged spotted gum and banksia in small sections as required by the design brief outlined below -
"This AWR competition is about demonstrating the strength and sustainability of Australian hardwoods, and how clever design coupled with expert timber selection and furniture construction can allow us to use our forest resources more wisely."
Competition judge, Rodney Hayward, wrote of Span:
'The structural genre that the late Tom Harrington took for himself was the repetitive use of slim, hardwood elements that simultaneously built and then stripped the piece of mass by allowing the penetration of light. How the console table of Simon Parsons would have pleased him: whimsical - of cranes and 19th century engineering - yet simultaneously intuitive, experimental, and cerebral...with that banksia top read as a scroll."
